Our Learning:
We did a ton of math this morning!  Students are focusing on many skills, such as:

Representing our calendar date:
-on ten frames,
-then making an addition equation.
-We then show different ways to represent the equation using a number line. Hope made the equation 20+22 and showed the leaps on the number line.  Other students came up with 22+0=22 and 10+10+2=22.

Decomposing Numbers:

We learn about decomposing numbers as a process in Mental math.  Breaking numbers down to "friendly numbers" such as 0,1,2,5,10 make it easier to do addition and subtraction in your head!

Fact Families:

Fact families are a great way to show the relationships between addition and subtraction.

All of these strategies are building the way to mental math, and "think addition" when we explore subtraction mental math strategy.

In Science we started some experiments to measure different temperatures like boiling water, cool water, outdoor temperatures and room temperature.

For Homework:
What happened when you put your thermometer in snow? boiling water? cool water? warm water?

Our Learning:
We got our new spelling word lists with a focus on /oo/ sounds.  In math we worked on problem solving, and this week we will be delving into strategies to help us solve problems such as underlining key words, circling numbers, choosing an appropriate math picture to solve. We will continue to look at solving problems with number doubles and using fact families.  In Science we did a Temperature pre-test.

For Homework:

Brad and Jane went to the park.  At the park, Brad noticed people were walking their dogs.  He decided to count all the feet he saw and ask his friend Jane to figure out how many people and how many dogs he saw altogether.
If Brad counted 22 feet, how many people and dogs could he have seen?

Solve the problem using numbers, pictures, and words.

Tuesday January 7th, 2020

DEAR PARENTS,
Happy New Year!   We were all pretty excited to say hello to all of our friends and happy to be back in school today!

WHAT'S NEW?

We are introducing a day-month behavior chart that will go back and forth daily.  Please take time to review the behavior tracker daily with your child and go over personal goals while in school.  Students will color in the "mug" with how they think they did, and the teacher will use a colored checkmark to show teacher perspective.
Purple- I was independent and "expected" today, showing excellent leadership!
Green-I had a great day, I may have needed a reminder to be expected.
Orange- I had an OK day, I needed a lot of help to focus/be expected and follow classroom rules.
Red- I needed lots of prompts/reminders and help to be expected.  A phone call to the office and/or home.
