Spelling Words December 15-20

Activities recommended:
1. make flash cards and sort according to different rules
-long and short vowels
-consonant blends, vowel teams
2. make a short couplet using rhyming words
The giant liked to eat
in the scorching summer heat.
3. use a highlighter for the blends and vowel teams
4. make two sets of flashcards and try to match pairs

Green :
1. Spelling pattern sort rule:
C/VVC short sound (heat)  & long sound (need)
odd ball word: read  which can be pronounced with short /e/ as in 'red' "I read a good book." or with the long /e/ sound, "What books do you like to read?"
2. consonant blends:
initial  gr-, bl-, sl-, sm-, dr-
 endings -ll, -ss, st
3. homophones: been and bean
two words that sound the same, but are spelled differently and have different meanings. (example: bear, bare)
eat
bled
heat
sled
read
well
bean
smell
been
less
need
dress
keep
west
green
rest

Yellow
1. Pattern sort: short vowel sound (chest) and long vowel (wheat)
Oddball: read is an oddball word. It can be considered both (Short (as in 'red') "I read a good book." vs long "What do you like to read?") great imitates the 'ate' sound,  sweat has a short /e/ vowel sound, typically 'ea' vowel teams have a long /e/ vowel as in treat.
2. " Y "as a vowel /e/ sound added to the end of words.
Can you find a small word in the words that have a 'y' added?  When you add a Y to a smaller word, does the meaning of that word necessarily change or does the meaning stay the same?
3. Consonant digraphs & blends and vowel teams
initial blends: wh-, pl-, sw-, gr-, sl-, dr, ch- , also qu-
end blends: -ll, -ss, -st,
vowel teams: ee, ea
4. a sneaky compound word has been thrown in: upset
compound words are two separate words with different meanings brought together to make a new word with a new meaning.  (i.e. snow & man = snowman, bell & boy = bellboy)
read
sleep
east
belly
wheat
jelly
plead
messy
great
dressy
sweat
quest
greed
chest
sweet
upset

Purple
1.Short vowel sounds (letter) and long vowel sounds (teacher)
compare long /e/  ee and  short /e/ with ea
oddball: scene which has a long /e/ sound, but does not fit with ea and ee words.
2. root words:
in compound words: restroom, sunset
in other words like: teach/teacher, great/greater, preach/preacher, west/western, quest/question
vs. words like sweater (sweat is not a root word of sweater) and weather
3. word endings -tion and -er
4. consonant blends:
tt, ss, th,  ch, st, sc

sunset
restroom
greater
question
teacher
western
preacher
scene
sweater
dresser
weather
mention
letter
queen
better
teenager

Our Learning

I learned new things in gym with batons. -Debbie
I really liked doing gym. -Wyatt

Well.... we decided to play silent soccer so thats where our comments end!
Today we worked on our good copies of our poem, starting working with our Social Studies textbook and are learning more about how to research and find information.  In math we worked on representing addition equations in multiple ways, as well as practicing using an open number line. Sydney donated a beautiful book to our classroom, "My Heart Fills With Happiness" by Monique Gray Smith, and said she loves how it teaches her a bit about Indigenous culture. Jaxon noticed that it was written in English and Blackfoot.

Have a good night!
